Site and Viticulture

The 2011 Syrah fruit is from Fieldstone Vineyards which was planted in 2002 by the late wine writer and winegrower, Dick Singer and his son, Steve Singer. It is the only commercial planting of Syrah in Prince Edward County. Yields were thinned, typically to about 1.5 tonnes/acre.

 Winemaking Description

Fermentation on the skins for 24 days followed by 16 months in new and second fill French oak has provided good structure for the peppery/berry flavours from the cool 2011 vintage.

Tasting Notes (2011)

This wine shows elegant red fruit character on the nose along with hints of oak and spices; the palate is layered with smokey plum, mocha, dry herbs and a hint of tobacco. There is a long and lingering finish.

 Food Pairing Suggestions

Great BBQ wine, especially meatier beef ribs with BBQ or mustard laced sauces. Excellent partner with hearty vegetable stews, pork or lamb sausage, or with Smokey Blue or Gouda cheese.

Critical Acclaim

“Dusty and peppery in a very cool climate syrah idiom, this has firmness and tart acids on a lean and angular frame. Fruit is decidedly tart and savoury, with a fine peppery finish. Tasted August 2013.” Score 87 John Szabo, WineAlign.ca

“A lovely, peppery cool climate style syrah - vibrant and musky. Intense and expressive varietal character here although a touch tart. Cherry and woodsy wild berry fruit is juicy, fresh and appealing on the palate with fine tannins. Quite compelling with good length. Tasted September 2013.” Score 88 Sara d’Amato, WineAlign.ca

“White pepper, piquant spice and notions of gamy notes swirl from the glass; it’s the only Syrah planted in the County. It broadens out on the palate with a tangy wash of red currant and pomegranate interwoven with sour cherry and wisps of strawberry. It’s mid weight with a lip-smacking aftertaste that replays palate flavours layering on herbaceous notes and fine-grained tannin. Pour with Italian braciole—stuffed beef rolls in tomato sauce.”  Vic Harradine, winecurrent.com

“There is very little syrah planted in Prince Edward County but the late Dick Singer took the challenge in his Fieldstone site, that Rosehall has farmed since his passing. This is definitely syrah, with a lifted peppery, herbal and floral notes, plus cran-raspberry fruit. It's light bodied, firm, tart and sinewy on the palate, with a slightly green, smoky…finish. Very good length. Score 87, David Lawrason, WineAlign.ca
